Eating well on a GLP-1: a nausea-aware playbook
2026-04-18 · 5 min read
GLP-1 medications (semaglutide, tirzepatide) work in part by slowing gastric emptying. The food choices that worked before the medication often stop working — fatty meals sit heavily, large portions become impossible, and protein quietly slips below maintenance.
Three patterns help. First, smaller and more frequent. Half a normal portion, eaten slowly, sipping water alongside. Second, protein first. Aim for 25–30 g of protein per meal even if your appetite is gone — muscle preservation is the leverage point. Third, gentle textures during dose-up weeks. Soups, yogurts, well-cooked grains, smoothies.
Things to skip during nausea windows: high-fat fried foods, very spicy dishes, large salads, bubbly drinks, alcohol. Things to lean on: Greek yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, lentil soup, baked fish, banana-oat pancakes, scrambled tofu.
Hydration matters more than usual because thirst cues blunt with the medication. Aim for ~half your body weight (lb) in fluid ounces per day, distributed throughout the day.
If you're on WellSignal, declare your GLP-1 status during onboarding. Your daily score adjusts to weight muscle preservation more heavily, and the coach proposes appropriately gentle meals during dose-up phases.
